Studying Society - The Essentials (Hardcover): Karen Evans, Dave King Studying Society - The Essentials (Hardcover)
Karen Evans, Dave King
R4,443 Discovery Miles 44 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Studying Society" is an introductory undergraduate level textbook which helps students to develop study skills as well as an understanding of the principles of social research and how these principles link to social theory.
"Studying Society" guides students in learning how to:
- Formulate questions
- Look for answers
- Understand the methods by which information is collected
- Critically evaluate information sources
- Communicate the results of their work to others
"Studying Society" encourages students to recognize that the study of society involves a systematic and considered approach to the collection and generation of knowledge, that a wide variety of sources can be utilized in this process and that each source has a unique part to play. In developing these skills, "Studying Society" explores the use of both traditional media, and new information and communication technologies. Throughout the book there is an emphasis on applying the problems and solutions presented, to "real world" issues. This involves the use of examples and exercises which are immediately relevant to the undergraduate experience, to everyday life and to the contemporary concepts which are studied by the social scientist.
This coherent and up-to-date text will be an invaluable learning tool for students of any discipline which involves the study of human beings and their societies.

Hundreds of books have been written on the art of writing. Here at last is a book by two professional editors to teach writers the techniques of the editing trade that turn promising manuscripts into published novels and short stories. Renni Browne and Dave King are two of the country's best-known independent editors. In their years as president and senior editor of The Editorial Department, they have edited the work of many writers - including bestselling authors - before the manuscripts went out to agents or publishers. Over half the manuscripts worked on to completion eventually got published, and over half that number were first novels. In this book Browne and King teach you, the writer, how to apply the editing techniques they have developed to your own manuscript, in order to bring your manuscript to its fullest potential. Chapters on dialogue, exposition, interior monologue and other techniques take you through the same processes an expert fiction editor would go through to perfect your manuscript. Each point is illustrated with examples, many drawn from the hundreds of books Browne and King have edited. Every chapter contains hands-on exercises to help you apply these techniques to your own work. And illustrations by New Yorker cartoonist George Booth keep everything in perspective.

Double bill of rauchy comedies by Frankie 'Titter Ye Not' Howerd, the outrageously camp and bawdy British comic. 'Up Pompeii' (1971) is the feature length spin-off from the Howerd's television series about a lazy slave living in ancient Pompeii. When a document falls into his hands listing the names of those plotting to assassinate Emperor Nero, he is forced to infiltrate the group. Hilarious mishaps result. In 'Up The Chastity Belt' (1971) Lurkalot (Frankie Howerd) is a humble serf in Custard Castle, who runs a side-line selling chastity belts and love potions at the local market place. He's called upon to save the day when Sir Braggart De Bombast attempts to seize the castle and kidnap the beautiful Lobelia De Custard.

Have you met Henry Maddox? He knows you - not personally of course... he really only knows your data. But from that data he actually may know you better than you think you know yourself. Henry knows where you've been and what you've bought. He knows all of your friends. Henry not only knows your behaviors, he understands your tendencies. And from those tendencies, he can predict what you're going to do before you've actually done it. Who is Henry Maddox? He is a 21st century marketing consultant and he specializes in highly personal and irresistibly persuasive advertising. Henry's strategies combine modern data mining (Big Data) techniques with other advanced and controversial marketing practices (Market Fragmentation, Cross Promotion, and Conglomerate Propagandizing) to the point where consumers don't even know they are being sold. Businesses love Henry because he not only moves product, he actually controls their customers. But when Henry is forced to face how his techniques affect real people, he realizes he has inadvertently given corporations the power to destroy society for their own ends. THE CURTAIN explores the effect that increasingly sophisticated marketing techniques have on communities, families, and individuals. In an age of digital distractions, who remembers the transcendent morality that has allowed past civilizations to prosper? When corporations have the influence and motive to define people by what they consume, are we as individuals losing the substance of who we really are? THE CURTAIN is entertaining, fun, thought provoking, educational, and frightening. Ord's storytelling is brilliant and his research extraordinary. THE CURTAIN is a must read for anyone that watches television or movies, listens to the radio, accesses the internet, logs into social media, has a smart phone, participates in loyalty card programs, or uses GPS technology. In short, THE CURTAIN is for everyone.

HERE'S the challenge, to run around the British Isles in 80 races in a calendar year. That was the task facing journalist and runner Dave King, who decided to spend 2007 in search of races the length and breadth of these fair isles to seek out the characters and culture of the sport. In a light-hearted and whimsical read, which Dave describes as a bit like "Alan Whicker with running shoes," he sets about on his grand tour beginning with a two kilometre race in Derbyshire at three minutes to midnight on New Year's Eve. There are a few fireworks and some rain to a low-key start to this madcap adventure which takes in races as grand as the London Marathon and the Great North Run, historical events such as the Braemar Highland Games and the Blaydon Races, fearsome sounding challenges like The Grizzly and The Terminator to the downright weird such as Race The Train in Wales and the Chiquita Bananaman Run, when Dave dressed up as a banana to be chased by hundreds of runners. Dave raced with inmates inside a prison, went hashing through flooded fields at night, raced with a dog, climbed bone-jarring mountains and ran through icy-cold rivers on a journey which took in races in England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The journey finished just where it began, in Derbyshire 12 months later for the 2km run on New Year's Eve. It is a fascinating, funny and touching account of his travels, unearthing many of the characters for whom running is not just a sport - it is a way of life.

For 30 years, since a Vietnam war injury, Howard Kapostash has communicated only with sounds and gestures--a condition that makes him appear slow and disturbed. But in his head, Howie is the same man he was before the war, longing for Sylvia, his high school sweetheart and mourning his parents and his chance at a family. Howie's solitude comes to abrupt end with a desperate phone call in the middle of the night; Sylvia is being forced into rehab and needs him to care for nine-year-old Ryan until she returns. Though Ryan's first days with Howie are strained by misunderstanding, his presence gradually transforms Howie and his entire household, which includes Laurel, a soup chef and a pair of housepainters Howie grumpily thinks of as Nit and Nat. By midsummer, their once cold home is alive with the happiness, disappointment and love of a real family. But with Sylvia's return imminent, Howie is obliged to wonder if the change is only temporary--and to reconsider, in the process, just what the war cost him. Triumphant and heartbreaking this is a singular and engaging story, heralding the arrival of a tremendous new voice in fiction.
